What the film really needed

I thought Reign Over Me was OK, nothing great. But I think it had the potential to be great. I'm no producer or anything, but I really would have liked some flashback scenes to show what Charlie (Sandler) was like before his tragedy.

The whole movie we see him as a mopey/crazy guy. We have nothing to compare that to. If there were some scenes from when he was a happy father/husband, I think it would make it more clear what the tragedy did to him. Plus it give the audience a break from the pure sadness of the movie.

While I agree with you, it would be wrong to say that there were absolutely no scenes showing his life before the attacks. At the point in the movie where he is sitting on the couch watching Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly singing and dancing he gets up, walks into the other room and gets the gun. After that you see him walking through the hallway and it flashes to a scene of his children running up to him and giving him a hug. Then he walks to the bathroom and it flashes back again to show his wife smiling at him with her toothbrush in hand.

Granted, it's not very much and I wish there had been more. But there was a little bit.

My thoughts exactly... It was a good film but it would've been ever better if we had learned more about Charlie's past.
