Question about the money...?

Sorry if this is stupid or insensitive or whatever but I was wondering about all the money Charlie got after his family died.

His mother-in-law says something about how he has plenty of money and indicates that whatever amount it is he basically never has to worry about money ever again and he offers up a million bucks as an apology to his friend like it's nothing. I thought she said something about getting money from the government. Even if the family were insured, how could he have possibly gotten so much money from that and "the government" to where he could just sit around doing nothing for the rest of his life--especially living in that giant apt in NY?

Does anyone know if this was realistic? It doesn't necessarily matter, I was just curious because I thought it was strange.

She said, "Between the government payout and the insurance policy, Charlie has enough to take care of himself...let's put it that way."

If he got a large sum of money and invested it properly, he could live off the interest. Obviously, if he just put the flat sum in a checking account, it works be gone eventually. But money market/savings accounts would help him earn interest that he could live on.

"...would be gone eventually."

Darn it, didn't catch the typo at first and can't correct on my phone app.

Okay, got it. Thanks!!

Rich people know how to stay rich.
I'm not sure how much the govt waa giving out. I doubt it was that much. Insurance polices could be quite a lot. My parents took out a policy on my when I was a child. If he had policies on his wife and all the kids that could be quite a sum of money. Has his friend invest it properly and it gets bigger.

The people you idolize wouldn't like you.

Well he had 3 kids and a wife, figure double indemnity, that could be a couple of million, don't know what the Govt settled on the survivors, but figue another couple million say 5 as a total

Same Apartment, same landlady, same rent maybe controlled

hired a competent accountant, doesn't live lasciviously

Charlie could make that work for the rest of his life

The average family of 9/11 victims got $2 million, tax free, from the 9/11 fund; some got as much as $7 million.
