I can't imagine such being a failure. Most of the competition has bent and set the bar on the ground.

Even though Roland makes claims "sooner or later, you all go bad" in a later portion of the movie, the Paladins primarily rationalize the killing of Jumpers because they defy the group's beliefs, i.e., religion. Roland (Samuel L. Jackson) states during the capture and murder of a Jumper in the jungle, "Only God should have the power to be all places at all times."
