Sitcom "Happy Days" lost credibility when Fonzie jumped over a shark on waterskis. "Waterllo Road" lost it when this multimillionairess, in her 20s I'd say, set up this new school in "tribute" to Byrne. Byrne is himself an arrogant control freak, with his codes of dress, conduct, corridor, and classroom and degrading pupils by having them stand up when he enters the room."Strict rules of classroom behaviour"pompous cow.And what had the two pupils done to justify being given a punishment essay?
History of Africa? This is Britain-what on earth for?

And why hasn't anyone questioned how the multimillionairess looks exactly like that substitute teacher who turned up a couple of series ago?

The one who pretended she was loaded, drove a Porsche & lived in a country mansion? Especially Grantley, he was determined to prove she was lying (and suceeded).

reply

Because she was playing a different character and this is TV land.

"No Silicon Heaven? Preposterous! Where would all the calculators go?"

I only left school a year ago and we had all those rules. Dress code, conduct, standing up when a staff member entered the room, and addressing the teachers as "sir" and "ma'am". It wasn't degrading, it was simply showing an appropriate level of respect. And this wasn't a private school.

Also, history lessons aren't limited to the history of Britain. During my time at secondary school (2004 - 2011), we learnt about the history of various countries including Soviet Russia, and Weimar and Nazi Germany.

Edit: Now I think about it, I think we might have briefly studied the slave trade in year nine. Specifically William Wilberforce's role in its abolition.

The SQA's curriculum however doesn't cover African history, except perhaps in S1 or S2, or in the context of the slave trade at Int1/2 and Higher or in South Africa 1910 - 84 at Advanced Higher. But they probably aren't supposed to be using the SQA's curriculum anyway, and I suppose there's nothing to stop a teacher teaching material outside of the curriculum as long as the rest is still covered.

I think standing up is degrading and hypocritical. Why should you be required to show respect you may not feel? And I also learned about non-British history-rightly-but not African.
As for dress codes-what about freedom of choice?

reply

I think a good school does not need to be run on such lines. It is true to life in a way, but un-realistic in others I think.

If my school hadn't had a uniform,my parents would have saved on clothes.Preparation for adult life-yes,you find that people in authority are often petty, spiteful, arbitrary, and unreasonable, have tendencies to paranoia and magalomania, and make up rules to amuse themselves.

Its is jumping the shark when you have a crazy outrageous plot like a multimillionaire with no credibility buying her own school, buying a school is not like buying a house, and what i don't understand is even if she bought a private school she would be broke in 5 years,it might be a show but it cost millions and millions to run a private school.

The best series of waterloo road was series 1-4 and 5-6 but after series 7 started, the show started to tanked, its just like shameless, shameless ran its self into the ground after season 6, now its getting cancel this year after 11 seasons, because there is nothing else to write, after season 6 water loo road is going into that route starting with season 7.

Google Scramble for Africa, after England and Europe mass murdered the people they wrote their own history of the Continent, I think this should be thought as part of History of Africa, in England.
