Grantly - character assassinated?

Anyone see the episode of the 7th February, where Bolton Smilie comes back to WR on a visit from the Army?

I don't want to give away spoilers, but I thought it was terrible that they wrote Grantly as a coward making up lies to save his own skin at the end, with the names of the dead students he supposedly taught who joined the Army and were KIA.

Anyone else think so?

Not a coward -but his snide coments about Bolton and the army were indefensible. These army-bashers should show respect for their betters.

I wondered if there was truth in it, cause he namedropped Paul Beasley

You mean Paul Langley, surely?

Er, I didn't take it that way at all. I took it to mean that he was lying to Tom about making it all up, so as to keep his reputation as a slimy, unemotional bastard. I took his name dropping to be one hundred percent genuine and honest.

I never thought of it that way, and I think it would be harder for him under stress with a gun aimed in his general direction to make up names and so forth on the fly.

And I have known Grantly to do as you say, lie to the staff to maintain his unique reputation.

Yeah, I thought the same thing; he didn't lie, he lied about lying. In other words, what he told Bolton was true.
