I agree, it was awful! I knew he was going to die let's face it, we all knew that, but I actually believed that we were going to get at least a few more episodes with him.
shareReally poor I agree. When they switched off his life support would have been a much more emotional ending if he actually died then. Is it even possible for him to start breathing on his own after his life support was switched off? Is it possible that he got better after being on deaths door? I assumed that he had already had the kidney transplant and that's why he was back home and able to go back to teaching.

NBTB, it was most likely because he exerted himself rushing around the place to try and find the discarded work of the boy he accused of cheating in that poetry contest of his. Standing in dumpsters surrounded by filth for about an hour didn't help either. He also put the new kidney transplant opening aside to do this instead. Now THAT'S commitment to your students. It's just a pity he died for it. I'm sure that that boy feels grateful for what he did for him and for what thought of his and the other students' hard work.
On a related note, I said here before that I figured that Grantly would've inherited both of Tom Clarkson's kidneys after HE died - but I guess they were too badly damaged.
