I don't think it was an inside joke. He was just putting on all of Santa's clothes with such enthusiasm, then he gets to the gloves and thinks they look silly so he takes them off. Also, I think it was supposed to mean that he wasn't going to do everything like the real Santa, he was going to put his own spin on it.
