Has IMDB ever made you question your own opinion on a film?

After really enjoying this film i came onto IMDB just to do my usual check up on "who was in it" and "where had i seen this actor before" nonsense, and to my shock the movie had a 5.7 rating.

Now don't get me wrong i know everyone is entitled to their opinion but it just struck me as madness as i personally didn't see the reason for such a low rating.

So it had me asking myself, "what was bad in this movie?" ect ect. Just wondering has this ever happened to anyone else, were a bad rating on this site has made you question your own enjoyment and outlook on a movie.

I personally loved the movie, and thought Paul Giamatti was the best Santa Claus there has ever been on the big screen

I do read other people's opinions, but they don't affect me by theselves. However, they might prompt me to give the movie a second look, and a second viewing can change my opinion.

I too loved the movie, but sometimes wonder if there is something wrong with me because I often go against the critics and ratings. I watched the movie 3 times and still enjoy it, as does my wife and three sons.

i gave it a 7. loved it.

IMDB is infested with 12 year olds or gormless geeks who act like 12 year olds. don't listen to 'em (unless they match your own opinion :P ).

Nothing wrong with liking movies that critics don't like or vice versa. As far as what IMDbers are concerned, there was an IMDb poll some time ago that indicated over 60% critique movies they haven't seen.

"60% critique movies they haven't seen"

that is outrageous.

I will say I have less argument with those who openly admit to not seeing the movie although I veheently believe that a movie can't be judged as far as quality by trailers and advertising.

However, I suspect that a lot of those "1" ratings come from those who didn't see the films in question. Also, I suspect that there's lots of playing around to raise or lower a favorite movie's ratings by rating adjacent movies one might not have ever seen. I believe that happened especially with THE DARK KNIGHT when many were trying to make it #1 and others were trying to keep it from the top position. IMHO, such monkey business is juvenile and only serves to hurt any reliability of the ratings.

I liked this movie as well and thought it would be a well-liked one but now i am thinking that i probably missed. One thing that i don't like what the critics did is compare Vince Vaughn's role as Fred to all other movies he did. I wo9uld have preferred if they just judged the movie on its immediate merits and not on how it compared to other Christmas movies or other movies that the stars have been in. I think the acting was good and Kevin spacey was awesome.

I did think that it was trying to be epic-y but that was all good cause it wasn't overly done and wasn't badly done.

I sometimes question myself too. I'll come on and give a film a high rating and notice that it has one of the lowest ratings (like this film), but I often wonder how people rate movies (if they bother to watch them). Sometimes I'll hate a film but the cinematogrophy will be so amazing I'll give it a higher rating. Or the story will be great but the actors are terrible but I'll give it a higher rating. Sometimes I'll also hate a movie but the actors are such top notch A-list actors I'll think well maybe I missed something, should I give it a higher rating (god I sound like I have no life)? I almost did that with "Burn After Reading" but the movie was just so terrible I gave it what I thought it deserved (Imean terrible films shouldn't be able to slide by just because they have a top notch cast). I'm getting used to just putting my honest opinion (I gave this a 9 it's one of the best Christmas movies I've seen in a looooong time).

Actually, I used IMDB's rating system to judge all the films I saw when I as just getting into watching films as a hobby.

There are so many films out there that have too low of a score, or too high.

Some examples are:

Jingle All the Way 4.6? BULL

The Santa Claus 6.1? TOO LOW

For films that are on DVD, Amazon.com is a far better source for customer ratings.

I try to look at the boards and see how many people are bitching about or praising the movie rather than just relying on the rating.

I thought the movie was pretty lame. Especially the ending. I was excepting this to me similar to Bad Santa but it turned out to be like the movie Santa Claus, the one with Tim Allen, except that Santa Claus was better. This is probably a great movie for the kids but it's very lame for anyone over 13.
