Paul Giamatti is one HECK of'a Santa.
At that one point near the end I almost started crying because he's such a good actor. Wow. Seriously, he was so good.
He needs to be in more movies. :)

His speech to Spacey at the end is very powerful - and he does come accross as the real Santa at this point. Until then, he's a little too goofy I thought.
sharePaul made the most of what they gave him to work with, He is a terrific actor , he saved another movie for me "lady in the water"
shareYeah Lady in the Water was rough. He was really good in that movie to.
Also he and Ed Norton in the Illusionist, good acting man.
Hey, hey, I loved The Illusionist!
Merry Christmas! Ho, ho, ho!

I think he did just as good a job as Tim Allen did in The Santa Claus movies because both of these movies show a side to Santa that's different then the usual 24/7 jolly Santa were all used to. Anybody who says Paul wasn't a good Santa didn't understand what this film was aiming for.
shareI think I understood what the film was aiming for, but I still think he wasn't quite right for the role. Then again, I don't think Vince Vaugn was either. But, to me, Santa was a little too ratty looking this time around. Even if he is in bad health and a bad humor, Santa shouldn't look like a homeless man in a cheap red suit. Maybe it had more to do with make-up and costume than performance, though.
I am not a Frankenstein. I'm a Fronkensteen.
Yeah well he's not so hot in "Shoot em up" either.......weak...
Clive Owen was good though.....
Hey, hey, my favorite scene in this was the snowball fight in which Giamatti believably had Santa showing anger and even almost hatred.
Merry Christmas! Ho, ho, ho!
He was fantastic in this movie. great Santa.
shareI thought he was gonna play his regular 'angry' character and be an angry santa but he was excellent.
shareI've aslways considered Edmund Gwynn in the original Miracle On 34th Street as the best Santa ever, but Giamatti just might replace him on my list. As I mentioned before, that snowball fight in which Santa lost his cool made the character much more real.
Merry Christmas! Ho, ho, ho!
Yeah the snowball scene and the family interactions between Santa and Fred we're so believavle in the Santa-ness.
Woo. Loved it.
"Gym pants,"
He was actually ALOT better than I thought he was gonna be...I was a little worried about him being santa at first
shareHey, hey, to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time Giamatti has been in a role that previous actors have played. As I should have expected, he brings out aspects of the character that we've never seen before, and I think that this disturbed some people. For instance, I don't remember Santa ever expressing anger or near-hatred before, and Giamatti accomplished this quite skillfully and believably. No Giamatti fan should pass up this movie, even if you're sure you'll hate the movie. See it just for GIAMATTI"s performance (if you're a fan).
Merry Christmas! Ho, ho, ho!
theres another Paul movie I recently rented called The Hawk is Dying...
while not my favorite film ever..you do get to see Paul flexing some other acting muscles, Paul has some of the most expressive eyes , he will get his oscar one day..thx
Hey, hey, I think Giamatti will be trying for an Emmy next year (portraying John Adams in a miniseries) and for an Oscar in 2009 starring as Philip K. Dick in The Owl In Daylight.
Merry Christmas! Ho, ho, ho!
If you liked him in this, go see Cinderella Man. He was amazing., and he should've won the Oscar that year.
shareI thought his acting was good, but he was not a very good santa claus. He looked too dishevelled and not quite old enough to live up to the traditional character.... Terrible movie, so that didn't help my opinion...
shareI might be out of place for saying this.
But thats how I imagined Santa when I was younger.
I didn't imagine a stereotypical Santa to be honest,
which you could say is quite weird, I guess I just have a crazy imagination.
It might of even made this film that extra bit better for me.
Dan Fogler: Who is ridiculed by the other Penguins.. for being a fag!
Hey, hey, RoPK, here's one guy in complete agreement with you. I think Giamatti's Santa made what was already, for me, an enjoyable film more enjoyable.
Merry Christmas! Ho, ho, ho!
I'm glad someone's on the same wave-length then :)
I think Paul did a great job in this film.
It wasn't exactly an Oscar-winning roll, but hey, it did the job.

Came here to post the same thing. thought his acting was spot on and portrayed santa very well i got a bit emotional at one point..
my favourite role of his will always be in big fat liar, hilarious!
Hey, hey, I felt that this movie portrayed Santa at home and even Santa can't be jolly all the time. This fits with real life that celebrities always show an image when they are in public, and Santa does the same, but he relaxes and is more normal at home.

I agree - I usually don't care much for Paul Giamatti (though I did like him in "Man On The Moon"), but I thought he was brilliant in this.
shareone of the best working actors out there. I think he is terrific in pretty much everything I've seen him in.
He made a wonderful Santa.

Hey, I feel that Giamatti infused the role with a deeper heart and soul along with the right touch of human falibility.

Hey, I'm truly anticipating his portrayal of John Adams on TV next year and his portrayal of Philip K. Dick on the big screen in 2009.

He's a great actor.
shareI noted his eyes too, and I found it interesting that the movie showed him as more of a Pepsi Cola Santa (I think that is why Fred goes thru the billboard.) His hair and beard was more St. Nicolas than Classic Santa, and I liked the conception of his character very much.
