Was guy a ghost or not?

I had to watch this movie twice, because the end caught my eye and had me second guessing if guy was a ghost throughout the movie. I’ve read others perceptions, and could see where people thought he died when she went to call 911. A part of me feels like he was always a ghost. It seems like he brought her there to reveal a story, for her to discover him, and also save her, while she brought peace to him by discovering his body. He noted that he’s travelled that road many times, which could indicate the occurring life there(after death) He explained to the girl that the road marked with “accident cross” was a scenic shortcut. So he already knew. How could he have known what the route was if it was his first time traveling it? He intended to lead her to his accident. He also knew a lot about the girl already(ghost tend to know everything about one). She would ask how he knew some of the unexplainable things about her, such as her favorite foods. He never had an logical answer. She asked him what was going on and he would always say that he could explain and before he could say anything, the explaining starts by his fatal car crash. He says he took that class, but she never once saw him. She could have just overlooked, or he could have previously taken that class long ago before her time. He didn’t hear her in the stores’ bathroom screaming, in fact no one did. Could it have been because everyone there were never really there including him? Just her. All an hallucination from the car ride. He indicated that the store was closed when he went back for help. I instantly started to feel that the store was never opened. Not even when “they both” went in. It looked closed off and abandoned at the end and I believe that she realized that herself once he lead her back there in the end, which he indicated in the beginning that she would be back on the highway in no time(so he knew that she would be safe from the beginning). In the end she stopped walking and realizes that it’s the store which is currently snowed out and closed, and the camera turned and focused on what she was seeing as well. In the beginning and in the end he quoted “this would just be our cute funny story” which makes me believe that he was never really there. His ghost led her there to reveal the story of the past including his accident. I don’t think the plow truck driver was there with her either. I think he was the one to get in the accident with “them” or him in the beginning. He says he’s going to check on the other guy who he encounters with during the crash, and the camera focuses back on the girl realizing that the “guys” car is the one that’s swerved off the road wrecked a few feet away(while also going into the back story that plow truck driver “knew” about the cop and family crash) and she’s there in the same spot. Also, guy would randomly “pop up” out of no where just as a spirit would. He also never really walked back to the gas station in under 3 minutes, but knew that it was closed.. like it was all along. He also once again could not give an logical answer when asked how did he make it to the gas station and back so quickly(ghost travel faster). He comes off as odd in the story to me, because he does all of the weird things to get a girl, such as shop for her favorite foods, lie about his home location just to travel with her. I don’t think he was the bad guy though. Just a guy trying to reveal his accident and move on. She just turned out to be the lucky one going in that direction to home, but I believe that she realizes he’s not a bad guy either once it shows her in the end looking at his picture and crying. It is confusing though, because she has a picture of him alive on her phone at the end, and ghost pictures can’t be detected of them being alive, but it could have been a hallucination as well of her realizing the truth of him, and keeping an memory of him in her head. That’s the crazy part about ghost stories, the real and fake are tended to become unclear causing confusion. It was truly an ghost story though. I don’t know how I’m just now coming across this movie, but it was a good one!

I liked this movie when I first watched it many years ago. You have some interesting ideas. I also had a faint idea that maybe the guy was a ghost, but this was a good read about all the corresponding connections.

ps: would be nice if you broke up that wall of text with paragraphs, as it would be easier to read.

I’m still shooked from this movie lol! I agree about the paragraph spacing. It just all came out. 🤣

I think I'll be re-watching the movie tonight after reading all the posts. I remember my mind tinkering for hours upon first viewing.
