no names

anyone else not notice the characters were not given names, i didn't realise until i watched the "making of" on the DVD.

wow. i hadn't even thought about it, or even noticed, until i red imdb's cast list right now. that's the first time i've ever seen the 2 top (main) characters listed as "guy" and "girl" for any major movie. that is kinda cool that they did that. i think it adds to the eerie, isolated, mysterious, and "chilly" atmosphere of the movie. good call from the scriptwriter. cool touch. very original.

Megan: You're NOT gonna believe me?..about her?!
WhiteBoy: What are you talkin about?

reply

LOL, truly, I didn´t realize about that, until I read the credits and found out there was no names, didn´t care.
How original.

Names aren´t neccessary.

reply

I think it was cool that they didnt have names.
It's kind of weird though....girl (Emily Blunt) gets in the car with guy without even knowing his name, and she didnt even introduce herself...though most likely he knew hers (since he was boderline stalking her)

18 is not too young for Stephen Moyer....is it? j/k

reply

Yes, it doesn't make logical sense. But if they had addressed one another by their names, it would have lent an intimacy/ordinariness that is not evident when they don't use the names. Not using the names just emphasizes how much they don't know about one another until at least the end of the film.

reply

I'm sure they knew each others' names, they just didn't use them. They probably said them on the phone call we didn't see.

reply

I actually thought that was really cool for some reason.

I mean, it made you appreciate the characters more in some way, I believe, because they didn't focus on all the unecessary formalities and they just jumped right in...

Adam Lambert for AI 2009!
Lil Kim & Derek for DWTS 2009!

Yup. And somehow I didn't find it odd at all that no names were mentioned. Actually, I first noticed their lack of names when the credits rolled. lol

Funny, cause nearing the end of the film I thought "Man, I really need to start paying more attention to things, I just watched this whole damn movie and didn't even catch the main character's names!"

The fact that they didn't use actual names in the script somehow added to the "urban legend" feel, imo. Something like "a guy and a girl drive on a deserted road in the middle of a snow storm when..." kinda thing.

I did notice near the end that no one was referred to by their name so I came on imdb to confirm that they did not gave any. Not surprising. In Antichrist (starring Willem Dafoe) they are simply named "He" and "She"
