Why/when did the 'Guy' choose to take the snowy scenic route? *SPOILERS*

So why did he?

I was wondering whether it was:

a) before they left the university, and he decided to do so because he thought it would be more romantic or whatever;

b) after they left the university, maybe when they stopped at the diner/gas station and he was talking to the suspicious guy working behind the counter while the "Girl" was locked in the bathroom. At that point we didn't know the Guy was basically just a stalker with an innocent crush, so it seemed possible that he was planning to kidnap the Girl and perhaps getting tips from the creepy counter guy on how best to go about it, ie. take her out onto some random deserted road in the middle of nowhere.

Still seems like a pretty dumb idea though... Like I mean how obvious is it that you shouldn't go driving down some abandoned snowy road in winter because you're pretty likely to get bogged...? Duh! Then again, I am talking about characters in a horror movie, so honestly, why am i surprised???

It's been a while since I saw the movie but I thought it was just a quick idea. Like, he saw that there was this small, romantic looking road and he made a quick turn onto it. It didn't look like it was planned at all.

I got the feeling that the guy was talking to the storeman asking about side roads while the girl was in the loo. The storeman suggests that the guy stays on the highway. When they get on the road I also had the feeling that turning down 606 was a spur of the moment decision.

well, he did say that she had complained about being bored on the highway so I guess he decided to take another path at that moment.

.....and the rest is silence.

maybe he wanted a longer route I just watched it and i was scratching my head going what the hell am i watching and why does this bitch keep dreaming?? and why am i forced to watch...and why in the hell didn't she just walk to the gas station if it was so close? I would have haled my ass there damn

Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars?

The gas station was closed and those patrons were dead people. She was the only alive person. Her driver was already dead. Watch it a few times and see if you can see him in the room. I bet you can't see him.

The gas station wasn't closed, if you listen to the dialogue the guy was more hurt when the car veered off the road than he lead the girl to believe so later on he confessed he never made it to the gas station as he began coughing up blood so he came back to the car.
