It seemed kind of obvious from the beginning... (spoilers)

That they are both dead, both lost spirits, lost between worlds, in purgatory, whatever, but dead, it's just that she doesn't know it. For example, no one heard her in the bathroom because she is a ghost, as opposed to they are ghosts and that's why they didn't hear her. The repeating history also makes sense in that, if she gets stuck in the bathroom every time, but eventually gets out, then no one would react. Either way, she is dead from the beginning, a ghost. Isn't this obvious?

Did you see the entire movie or are you watching it now? If you watch the end you might rethink your theory.

maybe she is stuck in a loop but as a living person not a dead one and everyone there is like, oh no, there goes that girl into the bathroom again to get stuck==oh no, there goes that girl into the bathroom again to get stuck==oh no, there goes that girl into the bathroom again to get stuck.....lol

Or maybe the toilet door was jammed oO..

I personally though that scene was a feint trying to make us think "here come the ghost". That is what horror films usually do.

reply

If you had watched the whole movie, you would have seen how the film ended. It does not play out how you think.

No, the people in the gas station/diner were the ghosts. When the boy went back for help, he found nothing there but a deserted gas station, assuming it was closed for the night, when in reality, there was really no one there.

reply

He never went back to the gas station - his injuries were too severe so he just returned to the car. He told Emily Blunt that he lied about his injuries because he didn't want to scare her.

They're coming to get you, Barbara!

reply

Ok, I may have mis-interpreted that part when I re-watched it. I guess he just "told" her that the has station was closed, without actually going back.

reply

He clearly wasn't gone long enough to get there and back, she said so.
