Mind boggling soundtrack

My other issues with this film notwithstanding, my biggest complaint is the soundtrack. If the goal was to make it as jarring and incongruent as possible, mission accomplished. And I will be the first to admit that this CAN be effective when done correctly. But I'm of the mind that a consistent tone is important in movies. Mr. Nobody was all over the place tonally, and Mr. Sandman etc. didn't help.

A quick glance of this board shows that the soundtrack was divisive at best. Those who liked it, what does Mr. Sandman add?

The soundtrack is a time piece to the different generations represented in the movie. Mr. Sandman represents Nemo's parents generation. Same thing with Everyday by Buddy Holly. Where is my mind by the Pixies represents Nemo and his generation. Since every generation ceases to be nothing like there parents when it comes to musical interest, yes, the soundtrack is going to be jarring and incongruent.

There is also instrumental music which is supposed to add emotion to whatever the audience is experiencing. Obviously this is going to be different from everything else.

Yes the soundtrack was meant to instantly time travel the viewer. However, I didn't understand why famous classical pieces were added: Fauré, Bach, Satie and Purcell. Interspersed was original material. I agree with the OP and would further say the soundtrack made the movie that much more gimmicky.
