Anna, Jean, or Elise?

Who would you want?

reply

Anna! She is the one he really loves.

I would've picked Jean. She seems like a sweetheart. Anna is a close second

reply

either Jean or Anna

Anna. She was the most independent but loving one. Elise was a manic depressive and could never truly love anyone, and Jean was too much of a pushover with no backbone of her own.

One of the most damning aspects of this movie is that Nemo fell in love with Elise. Why? It makes no sense and it makes him a much less sympathetic character. Sometimes decisions are so bad that you just have to shake your head and say "What the hell was I thinking?"

reply

On the contrary, what you describe as a damning aspect *IS* what makes this movie so brilliant! Human nature can throw surprising curve-balls, and each of his 3 timelines were believable and felt legitimate.

reply

Falling in love with someone is not a matter of choice.

reply

If falling in love is not a choice then is anything a choice?

reply

I think so. To make my statement clearer, dating with someone, kissing someone, marrying someone etc. are choices. So, Nemo could have chose to not marrying Elise, but I don't think he could have chose not to fall in love with her. Of course, he can choose to not feeding his love and let it vanish.

In an other timeline, he chose to be with Jean, but it doesn't mean, he fell in love with her.

So, basically, you are right in your OP that Elise was a choice, and apparently is not the best one. But it doesn't make Nemo less sympathetic for me. Firs, love can make you take irrational steps. Second, I love how Nemo took care of her and their children and how he made sacrifices for her.

Knowing what we know, there's no choice but Anna.
