how come the christopher walken both wheel-chaired and walking?

Does anyone understand why the hero of Christopher Walken can climb stairs himself but prefers to be using a wheel-chair almost all of the time?

Wasn't he sick? I imagine he saved his energy when he could.

Walken was in the wheelchair at the beginning because he was reflecting on the story after it happened. He was walking during the early parts of the retold story because he had not yet had his heart attack. After the attack, he was confined to a wheelchair presumably due to weakness.
