what didn't make sense at the very beginning
Why are Emily and her mom attending Red's funeral at the very beginning? I didn't understand that.

My take is Emily is being cared for at Red's wing of the hospital and Emily being the uninhibited type made her Mom bring her to his funeral so she could pay her respects.
