To me "End of the Whole Mess" was the most chilling one of the group. Imagine being the person who caused the extinction of the human race and that you did it while trying to keep them from blowing themselves up. The horror the two brothers felt at what they did is immense. I think episodes like these are a good test of empathy. If a person cannot put themselves into these episodes and feel the feeling then there might be something wrong with the person. I bet this would be a good test for sociopaths. Give them episodes like these and then test them afterward about how they believe the characters were feeling.

Hell of A Band was pretty awful, followed closely by Road Virus.

I didn't really care for The Fifth Quarter.

I liked The Fifth Quarter

The worst one to me was "You know they got a hell of a band."It was dumb and pointless!where were they in Hell or heaven?and whats with the concert lasting 12 years, did the lady say??

reply

"Road Virus" did it for me. I felt that Tom Berenger couldn't carry the story and his New England accent was awful, too. I thought "Battleground" was great for the opposite reason: Bill Hurt played it without dialogue at all.

In my opinion "Crouch End" is by far the worst one. The plot was stupid, the poorly done CGI made me want to turn it off, but I know Stephen King's short stories have great endings, but that one had a stupid ending to go with a stupid plot. It had nothing going for it, besides the cabbie.

I've only seen the first 2, but I don't know how Crouch End is going to be topped for sheer scrotum tightening embarrassment... I look forward to finding out.

Well put!

For me the worst one was "The Road Virus Heads North" just because there was a lot of potential with that story but it went nowhere. I really like the short story and was looking forward to seeing it but my attention drifted off after the first half hour or so.

Fifth Quarter was by far the worst episode, it didn't even look like it belonged with the rest of them because it was so poorly made. Battlground and Crouch end take tops honors easily (btw the most deviation from the original story is not Crouch End but Road Virus and Umneys if you actually read them).

reply

Actually 'End of the Whole Mess' was the lamest probably. Horrible acting, horrible editing, horrible directing, crappy special effects (that rock skipping through the water looked like a video game or something). Oh and the music was just awful (melodramatic orchestra stuff).

Battleground was the only decent adaptation. It is my favorite King story, but that just means my standards were higher. I think the rest really sucked, and I hope Stephen King sues the production team.

reply

The worst for me was "Crouch End" While watching it I kept thinking "man, SK needs to quite reading Neil Gaiman".

reply

this is for the guy who said he thought king was ripping off neil gaiman (whom i love)in the crouch end. actually he was ripping off hp lovecraft (which every horror writer does. ) notice all that blurry chthulu and yogsoggoth stuff towards the end. all those weird signs are the names of lovecrafts ancient and terrible gods.
as for which is the worst one... id have to go with autopsy room four because i feel like they totally missed the point. in the book it was scary and suspenseful while the show was practically a comedy. kings very good a mixing horror and comedy but it just didnt trasnslate to the screen very well. the main character was just a big joke and youre too busy laughing at him to really care wether he survives or not.

reply

For me it was "Hell of a Band." Although my reason is a little strange. :-p I'm from the area around where the story was set, the town that they were last at before they got lost as well as Tokatee. In the book, King does mention the name of that town and in the movie they don't. King put a lot of detail into the area of the story (making it simple to realize how easy it would be to get lost) and described the town and the area well. The movie had almost no resemblence to the area at all. I was really disappointed. But, other than that it was all right.

reply

Crouch End was terrible.
Battleground, The End of the Whole Mess, and The Road Virus Heads North---are the best!
