should this film have been more Twilight Zoney?

basically its about one mans (and his family) madness due to his 23 obsession.

but I was expecting it to have more of a creepy, eerie, mysterious, urbanlegend, Twilight Zone vibe - the uncovering of a dark underworld only very few people know about (abit like The Matrix, Dark City, Knowing). the number actually does mean something - leading to some huge pay off/twist (ok maybe not the end of the world/aliens etc but something downright creepy/SciFiy)

I guess if I were to change a few things:

-have it just about everyman Carrey - no family

-have the film be like a Russian doll of a movie...Carrey tumbling down the rabbit hole of 23 madness, uncovering truth after truth leading to some sinister revelation that everything is connected to 23 - e.g. uncovers the universe is a hologram and the number 23 is the input code or something crazy like that (yes like Matrix but not so SF and without all the superhero/guns/kungfu/prophecy/anime stuff - more like its opening half hour before Neo gets out.)
