It is indeed brutal, and very graphic, but it is a great anime nonetheless. At only 13 episodes, it's rather short compared to other anime.
Besides the ending, Elfen Lied has really good writing and characters. I would definitely recommend it to you.

Watch the first episode. If you can make it past the body count, you should be able to watch it. It's a pretty tragic storyline as well, for pretty much all of the characters involved in it.
