sexless

The first time I watched this series, I was surprised at how sexualized everything was.

The second time I watched it, I realized that the entire series was actually very sexless. It's true that the characters are frequently naked, and very frequently leered at by the camera (does anyone ever fall down without a panty shot?), yet through all of it, none of the characters ever have, or even seem to want, sex. The only time sex is even alluded to is when the nurse describes how she is an "anonymous virgin bleeding to death." As in, the only person who even brings up the topic isn't familiar with it firsthand.

Yuka is romantically interested in Kota, but only as far as hugging and kissing. When the possibility of going further appears, she immediately becomes upset.

Kota too is shown to be very uncomfortable about female nudity, multiple times, and with multiple females.

Nyuu seems very happy about and comfortable with nudity, but again in a completely sexless way.

Not even the adult characters provide a foil. There are childbirths, which were of course the result of sex, and yet that sex is never discussed, shown or even suggested.

I don't know if I have anything to say about all this. I just think it's interesting.

Yeah, I noticed the same. Nudity isn't used in a perverted way, it's just normal. It makes everything more natural.

reply

It's weird because the camera is really perverted, but the characters aren't.

For all the people claiming the nudity in this show is sexless and natural, I think you're forgetting the part where a foster father brutally rapes his 7-year old foster daughter, or when the professor tries to rape Lucy.

reply

Are either of those scenes in the anime, or are they manga exclusives?

does the professor only try? I was pretty certain he succeeded... but that never turned into any relevant plot line.

Your right. The manga is a little different though, although it is essentially the same. There is more story though. The only difference is that someone is aroused. It isn't Kota either, but Yuka. I don't want to spoil it, but its a part that happens between the two and almost my accident. But mainly because Yuka loves Kota. Its also kinda wrong since they're cousins.

In order for to your dreams to become a reality your must first believe in it.

I thought that it was accepted in that culture to be attracted to/have relationships with cousins?

BUT one thing I wondered about in the anime was the scene when Nyu kept trying to get Kota to squeeze her breast and seemed to be getting off on that. Was that a by-product of her abuse? Was she sexually attracted to Kota?

That's what a lot of people say, but I'm beginning to think that it isn't true since no one seems to be able to come up with any proof to back up the claim. It seems that the only people who say it's true are people who have heard other Elfen Lied/anime fans say that it was true. But so far I have yet to find an actual native of Japan who agrees with this.

The manga is much more sexual than the anime. There is even a scene between Director Kakuzawa and Shirakawa which could be seen as borderline hentai. Although the sexual nature was watered down for the show, this could simply be a throwback to the manga which did include a lot of pointless sexual-themed scenes.

I am aware of this thread being old, but please have a look at Naoto Kan's Wikipedia entry; he is Japan's most recent prime-minister to step down and currently in a marriage with his cousin. It is not something entirely normal in Japan, but it is fairly well tolerated, even amongst top officials.

I noticed it as well. Nudity everywhere, but no actual sex.

lol, exactly.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)

What I got from it wasn't that the show was sex filled, or without sex, but it was displaying sex in a scary, dark way.

There was a pedophile subplot shown in full detail. Lucy seemed to always be in full killer mode when she was naked, and many of the naked shots were blatant and unnerving(lots of child nudity).

I took it that the thing was trying to display sexuality in a disturbing way. This actually isn't that uncommen in film. The Alien from the alien series is supposed to be based on a guys... and the Hellraiser series litteraly is about S&M. Sex being shown in an 'evil' way is actually pretty common in horror. This just took it a lot further and was much more in your face with it.

I found most of the naked shots unnsettling, which I'm pretty sure was the point.
