shareYes it was lucy. The clock was symbolic. It was broken since the start, but at the end when we see lucy in front of the gate it suddenly works. I think that it meant that lucy came back to them. So we get a happy ending to a really beautifull story.

Open to interpretation you know.
Could be a ghost or thought of her being there, or really her and it's pretty happy and that things work out.
The manga goes a lot beyond this.
Its definitely Lucy at the gate, bc in the OVA they were all sitting back together in the house again and Lucy was back as Nyu.
shareThe OVA takes place during Episode 11 and therefore has no bearing on the ending.

Thanks, guys!~
sharethe manga ending is beautiful too, you should read it.
shareI heard that the anime team wanted Lucy and Kouta together, whereas in the manga it's Kouta and Yuka (judging by the little girl with him at the end who mentions mommy getting mad at them). Hence why Yuka seems to "give up" in the anime, whereas she "wins" in the manga (of course, it helps her that by that point Lucy is suffering a meltdown and has to have Kouta kill her to put her out of her misery). Kurama also doesn't die in the manga, like he did in the anime, and he's a much more tragic character than in the anime (pretty similar up to that point though in both versions).
That said, I think given what the anime team had to work with (12 episodes), the ending for it was okay overall. But yes, the manga was much better, for obvious reasons (more time to give character development to them all).
But the anime has something the manga can't replicate, that awesome/sad opening song.
The ending sort of made me confused as well. What puzzled me the most is what happened after the hugging on the stairs. Did that dialogue indicate Lucy would go somewhere or whatever (like rehabilitate, make amends, etc.)? Why didn't she just follow him home?
Also, what was up with the extra bowl at the table? Did they pretend Lucy was with them?
Lucy went back to the bridge to face the next assault by the SAT, where we see her other horn being shot off.
Oh. That explains it. Seems I did not pay enough attention, since I thought that was a reminiscence from her first horn taking damage. It all felt weird and out of place though. Thanks for clearing things up!
shareAssuming that there was at least a hope that there might be another season in which they continued to the end of the manga, it would probably have been Lucy returning as Nyu (since Lucy knows Kouta cannot forgive her fully but still cares for Nyu). From there they could have gone on with the remainder of the manga, with some alteration to account for Kouta knowing the past earlier than he originally did and some other changes the anime made. The amgiguity makes it possible for us to interpret at least some conclusion to the story when there is no second season.
