What was the point of Meggy?

Did no one else just think that Meggy was an incredibly pointless character? I don't understand why he was hanging around with Woody's gang in the first place when he had absolutely nothing in common with any of them, wikipedia says Combo brought him with him when he was released from jail but this was never explained? And throughout the film none of them show the slightest affection or friendship for him, he never plays any active part in any scene, he's always just *there*. The only real thing he did of note was trying to take a dump in the corner shop which was just bizarre, he wasn't really needed for comic relief of anything like that because they already had Gadget there

So was including him just a convenient way to bolster Combo's numbers without sacrificing a character that was actually vaguely likeable or we knew something about? Or have I missed something obvious with regards to his role?

The purpose of Meggy's character was so that the audience could measure Combo's redeemable qualities. Combo has some, Meggy doesn't.
