Another Sharpe?

Probably been posted before but is there any chance of another Sharpe being made? Or is Challenge the last we will see of Colonel Sharpe?

reply

Sharpe's Devil takes place in 1820 and would fall in line after Sharpe's Challenge. Let's hope the producers go for it; although most of it occurs in Chile and on the ocean, the producers could use the vessels that were made for the "Hornblower" series. In this adventure Sharpe and Harper travel to South America to look for a lost comrade and along the way they meet with a beaten Napoleon on the island of St. Helena, and the famous naval captain Cochrane who the author Patrick O'Brien based his Jack Aubrey on. Good story.

Or how about a Sharpe/Hornblower Cross over not big maybe one of them could appear in the back ground in the others show?

I'd love, love, love to see more episodes, but highly doubt it will ever happen, although there are Sharpe novels that weren't yet made into the tv series.

Sean Bean is now an internationally known, highly acclaimed actor from
"Lord of the Rings" "National Treasure" "Patriot Games" "Ronin". It took him 22 years to break out of simply being a UK/British star and now he is a Hollywood start.

First and foremost, Sean Bean is a serious artist and because he loved the Richard Sharpe role, and he has always acknowledged it was the Sharpe series that really made his career take off - 14 million viewers worldwide. He was willing to take a serious pay cut and go back to television because he really liked the "Challenge" script. So I don't think he is just another one of those money-grubber Hollywood "sell outs" - he looks for high quality scripts first and foremost.

But I doubt there will be more episodes. I remember seeing a quote from Celtic Picture Palace (the producers of the series) and Tom Clegg - and they both think "Challenge" #15 episode clearly gives an ending to the series. Sean Bean is 47, and I personally feel he still exudes incredible, sex appeal in middle age. He is still a hunk! But Sean Bean has always refused to have his face pumped full of Botox and resisted any form of plastic surgery. This might cause him to be cast not as often in the big Hollywood films - and maybe, maybe we might get lucky and still be seeing more episodes of "Sharpe."

Picture Palace Productions, which produced Sharpe's Challenge, states on their website that two new Sharpe films are in development. : )

Shiny!

reply

Sean Bean did Outlaw for next to nothing, because he felt strongly about the subject matter. So yes, he's a decent bloke.

I emailed Picture Palace about the two upcoming films and they said that they will be original scripts set in India.

How are they to get Sharpe Back to India, again? unless these stories happen on their way home, before they get back to england, they could get pulled in to something else. but how many things can go wrong in india?

reply

I know I'm replying to my own question but, tough.

after a long hard think I would guess if there is to be another episode of Sharpe in India it will most likely start with Sharpe and Harper ready to get on a boat back for England. there they can be turned round by whomever, an Intelegence officer of some sort. General Ross or maybe even Major Hogan. who somehow get Sharpe and Harper back out into India. doing what I don't know, How I don't know. why Shapre would want to go back out into battle once more I don't know. but its the only way I can see them staying in India.

reply

Don't forget Bernard Cornwell is not above writing special 'episodes' to flesh out Sean Bean's depiction of Sharpe - such as Sharpe's Battle. As for Hornblower cross-overs there is plenty of scope before Chile with 'Triumph', 'Trafalger' and 'Prey' which all precede 'Rifles' chronolgically.

So long as Mr Bean is in the title role any script would be worth watching (unless they give it to Rowan Atkinson's Mr Bean by mistake)

Great news, any updates?

Glad to see there's new sharpes on the way, but i wonder how they'll fit in India and Harper etc.

I don't know if anyone else has checked recently but i was unsure how certain the new sharpe films were so i emailed the production company and they said that there were 2 NEW scripts in development and they were waiting for ITV to commission them. They went on to suggest that i should enquire to ITV about this matter to encourage them to commission it, which i have done, and think some of you guys should do too, if you really want the 2 new ones. Would have to see the idea scrapped. wouldnt you?!

You might pass that message along in its entirety to the Compleat Bean webmaster because that's one of the sites that'll get the messages flowing.

Sean looked a little tired in Challenge, but I've seen him since and he looked truly fantastic so I could see him looking even better in the new ones.

Daragh O'Malley is not optional though. He's gotta be there. :)

reply

they'd never kill of Harper, it would be like killing off sharpe himself, the story needs bth of the characters to function properly.

*goes off to email ITV*

reply

to true , but they did it to harris and hagman , i dont even like to watch waterloo anymore , does anyone know harris's second name ?????????

reply

Yeah, its Harris.

We don't know his first name. lol

reply

i watched an interview with sean bean for Outlaw and one the questions he was asked was will sharpe be a full blown movie and he said they were thinking about it , and he would like to do one ! yay

reply

i like thw idea of a sharpe hornblower cross, i think it could be a great action packed episode of the all ready great series.

i really hope they do one like this.

reply

but would it work? maybe hornblower being on a ship in sharpes devil , or a sailor on a ship in sharpes prey ?

reply

Sharpe was on a ship in Sharpe's Trafalgar. I know this would be a prequel and would not be feasible on a tv budget but they could pinch the first half of the book and flesh it out. It would be better than that Commander drivel with russell crow.

reply

To the person who asked Harris first name, i think in one of the books (while since i read them) he's called tom - i stress i could be imagining things though

reply

really , i didnt know harris's first name was tom , wow i missed that. i should read them again its been a while since i read the first load .

reply

Sharpe will march again.

reply

Sharpe/Hornblower cross over will not happen. Euon whatshisname has stated he will not be doing anymore Hornblowers.

Dip me in honey and feed me to the lesbians.

reply

Ioan Gruffudd has allways said he would like to play Hornblower again and even said in fed 2007 he is trying to get a hollywood movie.

A&E who produce Hornblower stopped making the series because it cost too much to make each episode, some millionair out there offer to pay for 2 new episodes for us fans lol

reply

Id love to see sharpes Trafalgar made, but the cost and impossibility of it being made will prevent this.

reply

I just saw Sharpe's Challenge and it was great - the series isn't dead; there's still all the potential left from the originals. All it needs is the motivation from the companies to make it happen.
