SOMETIMES I AM OUTRAGED WITH PEOPLE THAT DEPEND ON THE CAST TO FORM THEIR OPINION!!UNFORGIVEN ONE OF THE BEST FILMS OF ALL TIME???I DONT THINK SO!AT LEAST SERAPHIM FALLS(PERHAPS EXCEPT FROM THE BACKSTORY)WAS BY FAR A BETTER MOVIE...
dear friend i am not trying to get a rise out of everybody, believe me!recently,i was checking out american film institute's top 100 movies list and they didnt have any leone's film in it!!!!unbelievable!!of course they had unforgiven at a profound position in the list!eastwood is a creation of sergio leone and nothing more in my hamble opinion!!unforgiven better than once upon a time in the west or o.u.a.t in america???it is a blasphymy!!seraphim falls was an overwhelming film and it is in my top five list of the year together with notes on a scandal, the perfume, the children of men and the corean film the host...
WOW. I'm not sure where to begin. Seraphim falls was not a bad film, I enjoyed it, but it could have been so much better. The first half of the film was amazing and I thought Brosnan's performance was one of his best. However the second half of the film was greatly lacking. Personally I didn't think the backstory was linked very well to the present. The mans family dies, Gideon resigns, and then all of a sudden its 3 years later on a snowy mountain top in New Mexico. How did Carver find him? If he had tracked him the whole time why didn't Gideon know it was him? the plot just wasn't as fleshed out as it could have been. I believe this to be award winning acting in a film which severely lacks a developed story. And yes the visuals were great as well.
By comparison the film Unforgiven was much better. You may not have liked the performance for "the Kid" but he was an arrogant little prick, you were supposed to find him annoying and roll your eyes. I have met many people in my life who loved to talk big but were never prepared for the reality of an event. That was the essence of his character. His performance worked. As for Clint Eastwood, he often gets bashed for "the same characters" because he has a very unique voice and when you are that popular the iconic image tends to stick in peoples minds. The plot was well developed, the acting was great, the story was fairly original, and it was well shot. I am not sure how far up the AFI list it is at the moment, but I fully believe that Unforgiven belongs on it somewhere.
I am of the same opinion regarding Unforgiven. Not a big fan of Kevin Costner either, but even his latest movie - Open Range - was better than Unforgiven.
Unforgiven was just overwrought masturbation. Seraphim Falls was sincere and had many darker qualities to it that made it ring true, regardless of the ending, which seemed fin to me and was appropriate for the genre.
Although I enjoyed Seraphim Falls greatly and it is arguably one of the finer westerns of modern time, its is not better than Unforgiven. Why? Firstly it made more money, won more oscars, had a legendary cast, and is not let down by a silly surreal ending that is completely out of sync with the rest of the film.
Unforgiven was more than just a nod to the greatest westerns of all time, it is quite rightly placed alongside them. Unforgiven will be watched in 40 years time just as we watch John Wayne,Henry Fonda movies now. Seraphim falls will, I doubt have that status.
