I think it just crushed his rib cage. Dying was just a matter of time for him.

shareLook close in the scene where he finds the trap and you will see the dead bear in it. The bear is covered in snow. And next time look before asking that sort of questions.
sharesfinx, I just watched this, and I didn't notice the bear. I thought Brosnan's character had perhaps left the trap there earlier. Sometimes people miss things even when they're trying to pay attention.

He then hung it from a tree with the rope, secured with the piece of pine tree that he had trimmed up. It clamped the first thing it hit as it swung, which was the kid's chest. That'll do you in in 1868!
