the black horse was Neeson's and it returned to him. It was not Brosnan's, so it was taken from him.

I thought he was also warning Neeson that if he succeded in his quest for vengeance he would pay for it with his own life.

I agree, that's what I picked up straight off. An interesting bit of foreshadowing for the end of the film.
