Much better than 3:10 to Yuma.

It is. First 15-20 minutes are especially good.

reply

No it wasn't the first 20 minutes are good and the rest is rubbish.

reply

Agreed. Though I think 3:10 to Yuma has some definitely noteworthy moments, they don't compare to this.

They are 2 completely different types of films or even very different types of Westerns, really.

'3:10...' was more of your standard, VERY traditional Western overall. Far more complicated in an obvious, superficial way with a HELL of a lot more little details and interactions that most normal Westerns would have. Overall, a very well made, directed, and acted film with strong traditional Western elements. I'd even go so far to say that it was much more 'Entertaining' than this film here, BUT...

Funny, what people are saying about the ending of this film here being rubbish is PRECISELY the way I feel about how they handled the last 20 minutes of '3:10...' Sure, a lot of people here who apparently do NOT like weird, surreal, or metaphysical (theological) elements in films just think its 'Stupid' in this one towards the end. Okay, fair enough. BUT... and it is a HUGE BUT like Mariah Carrey's, the way they handled 2 things COMPLETELY ruined an otherwise excellent film as far as '3:10...' is concerned in my lowly and wretched opinion. Without adding actual spoilers, just suffice to say that the way they came up with SUPPOSEDLY (and so easily it seems) getting the townspeople to join them in gunning for Christian Bale with his prisoner was beyond stupid (Why the HELL didn't they just simply PAY some more bad guys to join them and just ride into town with like 20 guys? GEEZ...!) AND... the way they portrayed the relationship between the two at the end, or more accurately the SPECIFIC way they came up with to make their race for the train station 'possible' was also not done very well or believably at all. Without giving too much away, why not just simply leave Russell Crowe's hands tied behind his back the entire time? This way at least it MIGHT make it SLIGHTLY more believable as to how Christian Bale could POSSIBLY have a ghost of a chance to get them to the station. Pretty awful; for me anyway, it honestly ruined the entire film because of the dumb@ss way they came up with how to work out these plot lines, when there were MANY other ways that they could have done it better.

So, I'm thinking that what they came up with in those 2 instances toward the end of '3:10...' were WAAAAAAAY more dumbsh* t and unbelievable then just a surreal few minutes with an Indian by a pond or a mysterious woman appearing in the desert and making odd deals with these guys. At least it certainly DOESN'T ruin the whole movie now, does it...?

Soooo, yeah, you might think that the end of this film was stupid. But, let me just say...

There is 'stupid'...

... and then there is 'STUPID!!!'

Well said.

The ending to Seraphim Falls reminds me of the brisk but weighty encounter the main character has with the black panther in Red Hills. An otherwise realistic film with a surreal atmosphere and element that actually makes sense.

For entertainment purposes I believe 3:10 is the superior film -- you can show it to anyone and it's doable; easy to get and understand by the time the credits roll.

Seraphim Falls is a movie that sticks with you, heck it's the kind of film that might even follow you into the everyday dealings of your life.

The end scene where they could either choose something to help them along in life or something that could help fuel their revenge was very telling and spoke loudly through its symbolic peddling. I loved it, but as this forum board shows, a lot of other people didn't.

Still glad to see that some people enjoyed it, though.
