There were a number of things, but the big payoff is a small sign near the axle which says "Louise C Fair, Proprietor."

"Louise C Fair, Proprietor" which was a hint that the women was actually Lucifer, and that both men did a deal with the devil.

Could have also been a political statement to keep government hands off private businesses: Laissez Faire. This type of heavy handed symbolism sucked the first time it was used in the otherwise great and sexy, "Angel Heart", Louis Cyphre.
