They both had a star just above their elbow, but the movie never explained it.

Based on Greg's commentary on the DVD, he wanted the audience to get that there was a history between their characters, but that's as far as he explained it.

Greg is pretty awesome at putting in small details. And mostly these tiny details are never explained, but there great fun to look at and try and solve.
