In the beginning, when they're all getting on the boat, he has two tickets. The tour guide asks him if someone else was coming, but he says that it's only him. I'm assuming that he and his wife had planned this trip together, and already had tickets, before she died. So he put her ashes in the water so she could share in the experience.
