We never see him fall into the jaws of the beast, or surface, or his dead body.
Could he have survived?
Probably not, I wish when the guy came into the LAIR at the end he didn't just find half of Neils body but the bodies of that American guy (played by an Aussie actor) and the body of the Englishman to add to the scare/gore factor.
