No attempt to patch up the boat

The first means of escape, the boat. Surely an inspection of the damage should have been included.
They had a knife, there was wood and clothing to perhaps stuff the hole with. bail it out, a test for watertightness and if the repair held then make for the bank at least, or back towards base.

Would YOU try to repair the boat with a rouge croc nearby? Also even if they managed to be able to try and repair it without being attacked, there is no guarantee the boat would stay afloat long enough for them to escape. And even IF they managed to repair the boat and it stays afloat, the croc would only attack it again.
