Crocodile Movies Do Not Do Well

I thought Rogue was a surpising good movie. Well written, good actors, there was a plot... This wasn't your typical saturday after noon SyFy chanel.

But it did not do well at the box office. Here is an exerpt I found from the article at
http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/09/12/crocodile-movies-do-not-do-well/

Did you know? Apparently, moviegoers don't like crocodiles.
…while Rogue, a 2008 Australian release starring future movie stars Sam Worthington and Mia Wasikowska, took in a sad $10,452 in the single week in played in 10 American theaters. (The $25 million picture bombed around the world as well, earning just $4.6 million total.) Then Creature came along and out-bombed everything.
And so, the croc genre, it seems, is dead in the water. Do you think crocodiles will ever become as appealing as sharks, or are they destined to lurk in the box office depths forever?

I hope they weren't expecting too big a box office return with little or no adverstising and opening in ten theatres.

The problem of this movie wasn't the croc, but the unforgivable lack of marketing. The first time I heard about this movie was when imdb had the "10 underrated horror movies" special for Halloween. I knew the about other 9 movies they suggested and have seen 8 of them, but I never heard about Rogue, which I ordered immediately. How are people supposed to go see a movie when they don't even know it exists? While some movies certainly are advertised too much, Rogue wasn't advertised enough. Trust me, it's very hard for a horror movie to fly below my radar, but they managed this remarkable feat. The producers are to blame for that.

yeah, i only found out about this movie via imdb recommend feature. and it was a good movie indeed. most animal hunt human movies dont do well. people think they should be huntign the animal. they are ok with zombies, vampires, demons ect hunting them since they are normally though of as stronger, whereas animals are usually though of as weaker (im not claiming they are, its just general consensus. and after all, cow is stronger than human but id still be the farmer with the rifle).
another reason may be very advertised lake placid. certainly a disgrace to crocodile genre movies.

I saw it on IMDb recommendations. Never heard of it until a few days ago. It's a pretty decent movie.

That's part of the magic of this movie. Crocodile movies don't do well and are expected to not do well. This reputation is usually earned by the sub-par quality of most of them, so it's a breath of fresh to see one done competently.

Not true. "Lake Placid" earned almost double it's budget.

You are missing part of that general rule. You know the part that films often make a lot more on home video and broadcast rights than they do in theaters. Lake Placid was very successful. If it didn't make any money then there would not have been three sequels.
