Size of croc
How big was the croc? I'm no good at judging size but was wondering how big it was compared to a 'normal' croc...

sharePeople have been saying it's around 8 metres or 25 feet, but when you look at the trailer and pics the croc looks hell of alot bigger than that. Also the director said in an interview that the croc is around 25 feet eventhough it looks massive.
Peace Out !
From National Geographic,
An average adult male saltwater crocodile is typically 5 metres (17 feet) long, and weighs around 1000 pounds. However the maximum size of the saltwater crocodile is well over 7m (23ft) in length and over 2200 pounds (1000 kg). The largest confirmed estuarine (saltwater) crocodile is a 8.6m (28.3ft) crocodile shot in Australia, with larger records unconfirmed.
Thanks gguest-2 for that information on saltwater crocs, unreal!
sharethat is impressive... 28 feet! interestingly, the other water bound predator in australia is the great white shark - largest being 23 feet.. weighed a lot more though - 3300 kg which is about 7000 pounds.. i wouldnt like to come across either!
sharei read an article of the actual incident, and it seems the croc was actually about 15 feet long. 15 feet is still hella scary, and probably even harder to see.

Gustave is the largest crocodile known to be alive by mankind
he is roughly 30 feet long and weighs around 3 tons
but i cant remember if he Saltwater or Nile because he lives at the Delta near Africas centeral east coast
No, he is not. Again, I quote National Geographic:
Have You Seen This Crocodile?
A cold-blooded serial killer is on the loose. His name is Gustave. He's 20 feet long (6 meters), weighs 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms), and stands accused of devouring hundreds of people.
Primeval was a lie.

Some info on that one, found in The Australian news article.
"In July 1957, Krys, an attractive blonde Polish immigrant then aged 30, killed Australia's biggest known crocodile with a single shot on the banks of the Norman River near the Gulf of Carpentaria town of Normanton. The saltwater crocodile measured 8.63m, a size unheard of in Australia and one that still draws scepticism from some people today."
I watched this movie tonight and enjoyed it.
At the end, there is a news article pinned on the wall about Michael Vartans character, which also says the croc was 7m long, but to me that croc looked alot bigger than 7m. It looked pre-historic size.
shareSorry, they really do get that length, and are unbelievably massive ... the largest shot being measured 28.3 feet long. I have seen casts of crocodiles easily comparable in size to the one depicted in the film. The photos in the pub were genuine pics.
But you ARE Blanche ... and I AM.
I thought the same thing, he looked much bigger than 7 meters... That could of course have something to do with the fact that he was about 7 meters around as well. In my eyes what made the Croc look pre-historic big was it's girth. Almost too thick. But that didn't make me enjoy the movie any less, I thought it was a decent animal-horror film.
shareIt was probably exaggerated a little in some scenes (the parts where the lead was stuck in the cave hellhole and sneaking about its lair), but I think I believe the size, more or less. Maybe that's because I've been to a crocodile farm and looked down a pit of saltwater crocs, and if the wild didn't produce animals bigger than those in captivity I'd be frankly surprised.

Actually, you have it exactly backwards. An alligator's jaws are much flatter and wider than that of a crocodile of similar length, so much that you can tell the difference at a glance. However saltwater and Nile crocodiles both have about twice the bite force of an alligator and are much more aggressive and dangerous to humans. Alligator attacks on humans are rare, but crocodiles kill over 2000 people every year, mostly in Africa, but saltwaters usually claim a handful of victims in Australia as well. Also, a 12 foot alligator would be considered huge for that species and would be much "thicker" than a 12 foot croc. Of course, as has been pointed out above, crocodiles routinely reach 17 feet, and a few get over 20. At that size, they are plenty broad and can weigh over a ton.
Just google the two for pictures. No one who knows anything about these two species would mistake one for the other.
