In the comics, it's called the Microverse and operates on a different level.

With the original Wasp planned to show up in the next movie, it's safe to say there is an escape.

Seeing it that way, as it was pretty much described in the movie, really is depressing. But in the sequel they'll maybe give a less disturbing explanation to what she experienced or what she basically did to escape. And if not, then kudos for the edge. :)

Good call. Your OP and the responses reminded me immediately of S. King's sci fi short story 'The Jaunt', where (spoilers) if people inadvertently teleport whilst awake and conscious, although their physical form transfers instantly their minds experience eons of isolation and zero input, and they emerge utterly insane and broken.

That makes the talk of having the wife brought out of it in a sequel deliciously chilling.

What does a person shrinking for infinity eat and drink? Eventually the spaces between atoms would be as vast as the spaces between stars. With nothing within reach for sustenance, she would die of thirst or starve. And what about breathing? At some point she would be smaller than the molecules of oxygen and nitrogen that make up breathable air. I guess it doesn't pay to think too hard about comic book stuff.
