Was he in a coma, then woke up but missed the '73 world so killed himself to go back there? Also, did he intend to kill himself or to put himself into another coma? (Actually was he ever in a coma?)

I assume that you are yet to watch the end of Ashes to Ashes? That helps make LoM make more sense. You are there with your thoughts anyway. Sam was in a coma, then he was saved by his doctor and came back to the real world, here he made a tape saying about his 'coma world' (which Alex Drake gets her hands on to form Ashes to Ashes) Then he realises he was more alive inside this 1973 world so he jumped off of the building to kill himself, hence returning to 1973 and shooting Paddy Maguire from Shameless haha.
