Agree. A captain is usually in charge of a precinct, so a Detective Superintendant or Chief Superintendant would be equivalent. A lieutenant is probably closest, as they would run a division, like narcotics or homicide. Most US forces don't have an interum rank between sergeant and lieutenant, though there are different grades below sergeant, on some forces. For instance, on Barney Miller, Wojohowicz was a Detective 3rd Grade, until he finally passed the sergeant's exam. The US varies more widely, depending on the police force in question: Federal, State, County, Municipal or other force.
