Query for American viewers

Could someone please tell me how Gene's rank of Detective Chief Inspector is translated into the US police ranking system?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The US ranking system is based on a military grading..so I would think that the equivilant of a DCI would be a detective lieutenant?

Thank you. Not that you care, but the reason I ask is because I watch the tv show "Monk" and have always wondered if Gene would be under the command of Captain Stottlemeyer or equal to him. Now I know. Thanks again.

I always figured it would be like a lieutenant, but I'm assuming that from watching Law and Order.

Gene Hunt is a Detective Chief Inspector.In the UK's Police service's that's the 4th Highest after Inspector,Sergeant & Constable.
Detective is a grade not a rank in the UK,so i think he's the equivalent rank to a US Police Captain, after Inspector/Leiutenant,Sergeant/Sergeant,Constable/Officer.

Agree. A captain is usually in charge of a precinct, so a Detective Superintendant or Chief Superintendant would be equivalent. A lieutenant is probably closest, as they would run a division, like narcotics or homicide. Most US forces don't have an interum rank between sergeant and lieutenant, though there are different grades below sergeant, on some forces. For instance, on Barney Miller, Wojohowicz was a Detective 3rd Grade, until he finally passed the sergeant's exam. The US varies more widely, depending on the police force in question: Federal, State, County, Municipal or other force.

I read this post this morning and coincidentally, I just came across an old TV Guide article (I'm in the process of moving, so I'm dumping old magazines) with a little blurb about the US LoM. It says that the American Gene Hunt was indeed a Lieutenant.

He's the equivalent of Lieutenant Daniels on The Wire. So, LT.
