Is it ever addressed in the show why Sam Tyler never drives back to Hyde in order to sort out his "origins" --- to see if friends remembered him there, or else to find out if he could get home by "returning to Hyde" ?

At one point Gene Hunt tells Sam that he cannot return to Hyde there by supporting the concept that the Series,and "Ashes to Ashes" developes that he is in a form of Limbo between life and death.

Towards the end of Episode 2, Sam comes into Gene's office and asks to return to Hyde," Gene says sure, picks up the phone and asks "Hello, is this the Wizard of Oz?"

I really hate seeing that spin-off used to explain what was "really" happening in Life on Mars. Retro *beep* LoM can and should stand on its own as Sam's story.
Surely though if he was to drive to Hyde, it would still be Hyde 1973...
Also, as Templeremus says, "Hyde" is simply Sam's way of referring to 2006 without attracting too much suspicion. If I remember correctly it's Gene who originally refers to 2006 as "Hyde" and Sam just runs with it.
As it's Gene's fantasy, he could also be trying to plant the idea that Sam is actually on transfer from Hyde to keep him in the limbo world and forget his own world, the same way he does for Chris, Ray, Annie and later Shaz.

In the final Life On Mars episode after Sam has woken up there is a shot where you see that he has been in the Hyde Ward at the hospital.
"I don't need to fight to prove I'm right. I don't need to be forgiven."
