Katherine Heigl Hated This Movie

Girl meets guy, girl hates guy, girl loves guy -- it's sort of difficult to differentiate Knocked Up from any other Katherine Heigl flick, but according to the rom-com regular herself, the film was 'a little sexist. It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys. It exaggerated the characters, and I had a hard time with it...'

Not wanting to pigeon-hole herself into such discriminatory roles, Heigl then went on to star in The Ugly Truth, a misogynistic movie in which girl meets guy, girl hates guy, girl loves guy. Her Knocked Up co-star, Seth Rogen, rightly called her out for being a hypocrite.

I can't really blame her. This movie is sexist and degrading to women. And men are portrayed as losers in life.

First off, this is old news and has already been discussed to death on this board.

Secondly, Heigl didn't say the movie was degrading to women. Her complaint was how the female characters were humorless shrews as opposed to the male characters who come across as a lot more fun.

Also, the movie does not portray men as losers. Paul Rudd's character had a good job and was married with children. Bill Hader and Ken Jeong's characters also had jobs.

Katherine is an idiot. If she didn't like the movie, why did she agree to do it? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!

reply

Katherine is a dreadful human being but she's correct about this being a sexist movie. Its target audience is other sexist men.

reply

I don't see how this movie is sexist at all! If this movie was sexist, all the women wouldn't have jobs and be stuck in the kitchen doing the cooking and cleaning. And the male characters are just as flawed as the women, especially Seth Rogen's character who is a lazy stoner. And Katherine shouldn't have done the movie if she didn't like it.

reply

"And Katherine shouldn't have done the movie if she didn't like it."...I disagree...why not make a lil' money?

reply

Well, don't do it and bitch about it afterwards. I assume she saw the script before they started shooting?

"Why do you say this to me when you know I will kill you for it?"

reply

also she starred in the equally sexist, 27 Dresses.

reply

y do you think katherine is a dreadful human being?

reply

Yes, she is. I hear she is difficult to work with. And it looks like karma has bit her on the ass now that all of her films have flopped.

reply

That "difficult to work with" is such a broad common description that many outside the industry exaggerate. Movie sets of even the most civil productions have situations that outside observers would call "difficult".

reply

This movie portrayed the men as irresponsible man children who are whipped by their women and constantly need to apologize for everything they do. It's another in a long line of movies and shows that make men out to be useless accessories which can be discarded when convenient. I agree it's sexist but not in the way you do. The women were definitely unlikable though, but he did base them on real life situations.

reply

I will largely leave aside the "feminist" issue--although to me there is nothing LESS feminist than the rom-coms she usually does. They're basically movies for overgrown princesses waiting around for Prince Charming to rescue them.

But given her track record, it's a COMPLIMENT if she really hated this movie. There are few actresses I can think of with worse general film choices. The average Katherine Heigl film/TV project makes me sincerely long for the sweet release of death (but I usually just turn off the movie).

Also, her greatest cinematic accomplishment aside from this was showing off her teenage butt cheeks in an especially misbegotten DISNEY movie years ago. I don't know if she's a "terrible person" in real life, but her movies are definitely pretty terrible. And that's all that matters to me.

reply

No, it's not begotten.

As a woman, I've never found this movie sexist. I never thought Allison was shrewd or uptight except a couple of times when she was hormonal from the pregnancy and had an excuse, and maybe a little bit the morning after their one night stand but that was it. She was fine. Debbie was a bit bitchy but she was clearly unhappy in her marriage and it was shown that Pete was the reason she was so miserable, because they were both as bad as each other and didn't go well together. The guys may have been shown as more laidback and fun but they still weren't shown in a great light, they were all supposed to be losers. I thought this movie just had very realistic characters.

Besides, she can't talk when The Ugly Truth is genuinely one of the most sexist movies I've ever seen. It's actually offensive to both men and women.
