David Lynch on THE TREE OF LIFE

“Some people go nuts for ‘Tree of Life,’ ” he said. “I love Terry Malick. But ‘Tree of Life’ wasn’t my cup of tea.” Asked what he didn’t like, he repeated. “It wasn’t my cup of tea.”

Has David not gotten over his professional jealousy of Fisk/Malick? 

I think he meant it wasn't his cup of black coffee.

Interesting.

I just caught the film for the first time yesterday and coincidentally, wasn't my cup of tea either.

Don't think it was a bad film. In fact, I admire a different approach to story telling. That same material in the hands of so many other directors would have been a cheesy Lifetime feature.

Same goes with any film I guess, you connect with it or you don't. Easy for me to see why some people connected with this one, easy for me to see why others didn't. I think I got what Terry M. was going for, but wasn't feeling it.

Great visuals though and a unique way to tell a story. I'll give him props for that.

I have no idea if Lynch is jealous or not (do you?), but he has no reason to be jealous. Certainly in this case.

I've heard it mentioned a couple of times in interviews with Jack Fisk.

"No.  No, ’cause see David and I, we’ve always been real competitive.  You know, we went to art school together.  But we shared studios, like when we were in highschool we had a studio – it was an old house – we shared it.  We’ve always worked together, I mean, like side by side, but we haven’t worked on very many projects together.   You know, just because we – I don’t know, it’s sort of a professional jealousy.  You know, it keeps us working, but we work better side-by-side than on the same projects."

^ This one's from 1981, long before they worked together on The Straight Story.
