In response to another thread which mentioned that the film critic Roger Ebert had placed The Tree of Life in his list of top 10 films of all time I was wondering how many on these boards would follow suit, or, if not, what sort of films they would choose as opposed to The Tree of Life. I'm interested in hearing the views of both fans and haters (or detractors if hater is too strong of a word).

My top 10 is (in no particular order)

1. The Godfather/ The Godfather Part II (1972/ 1974)
2. Vertigo (1958)
3. Mulholland Drive (2001)
4. Solyaris (1972)
5. Fanny and Alexander (1982)
6. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
7. Taxi Driver (1976)
8. A Woman Under the Influence (1974)
9. Sunrise (1927)
10.Last Tango in Paris (1972)

1. Lawrence of Arabia is my favorite movie, there isn't any number 2 for me. The rest of these movies are on an elastic and ever changing list.

I loved the Passchendaele short story. I was considering adapting it. I wasn't even aware that a movie had been made of it! Do you mind elaborating on why you liked it?

Blade Runner
Satantango
Aguirre, The Wrath of God
Nostalghia
The Thin Red Line
Wings of Desire
Days of Heaven
Mirror
Stroszek
Dumb and Dumber

I think The Tree of Life will get in to my top ten one day, but these films I have wacthed many times, and I continue to return to them.

Once Upon a Time in the West

Runaway Train
Bladerunner
The Deer Hunter

If this was a Sight & Sound best 10 though, 2001 and The Tree of Life would definitly make it (both in my Top 20 or so favourite films). Runaway Train would be replaced (more of a personal favourite than a masterpiece)
