Does anyone know? 2things that I don't understand. *** SPOILERS ****

.... 1st: Luelywn (sp?) Goes back and pays for a 2nd room - room 138 if I recall correctly; he rented room 38 1st (right?)
We see him then head towards that room 138. In the scene soon after, we see Chigur bust open the door of room 138 only to find those 3 Mexicans ( who, if I'm not mistaken, were given a 2nd transponder/locater to also look for the briefcase of money. ) what confuses me is : shouldn't Luelywn have been in that room? I thought he got that 2nd room so he could go thru the duct pipes to get the briefcase back out??

2. After rewatching it, I'm still having a hard time figuring out what role that guy in the office played in everything. Was he the main dude that set up the drug buy? What (are we to assume) happened at the place in the desert where everyone got shot? Why would they leave the drugs and money there only to have to come back? The dead dude against the tree - dogs he die of his wound or commit suicide? Ok i apologize, that's more than 2 questions sorry.
I really loved this movie and like the fact that it leaves questions unanswered as well as the fact that we didn't see everything happen, such as the presumed killing of the chicken farmer dude etc, but also, like in another favorite of mine, one of the main characters dying either wasn't shown or was "played down" if u know what i mean. I find that to have a bigger impact.
Any insights would be appreciated. :)

2 corrections: "The dead dude against the tree - dogs he die of his wound or commit suicide?....." Should read... " ....did* he die of his wound..."

Plus that other fave movie of mine i was referring to but forgot to write was pulp fiction. Sorry about that.

Llewellyn gets a second room because he realizes someone is in or has been in his first room. He uses the map to select one with connecting duct work to his own room to pull the bag out from the other side. The Mexicans are in his room when Chigurh busts in because the transponder led them there but they can't figure out where the case is.

The office guy is an upper-mid-level corporate drug lord, so, yes, he was responsible for the American half of the drug deal gone bad.

I saw no evidence of suicide for "el ultimo hombre" against the tree. I don't know, but I guess he died of his wounds.

Okay I've rewatched that entire sequence and think i understand it now: Lewelyn rents room 138. Enters room and hides briefcase. Leaves To go out shopping. When he comes back he notices that suspicious car so tells cab driver to keep driving to another hotel. L THEN comes back to that 1st hotel where he asks that funny nosy lady to rent a 2nd room. ( so funny how she can't just mind her own business and just rent it to him already ("its got 2 double beds tho?!") haha).
Anyway, L then goes to the new room, which is # 38- directly behind his 1st room 138.
Now Chigur locates the area of the briefcase and also rents a room, #130, and proceeds to go there where he puts his stuff down, takes off his boots and gets the gun and compresded air thingie out - he then blasts the door open to room 138, which is where the 3 humbras that are looking for him are now. I didn't know what he was referring to when he asked the dude in the shower "how'd you find that" but I think he meant the transponder/briefcase.
By this time, L has presumably already high-tailed it out of there and got picked up by that black dude (who scolded him for hitchiking).
I find it odd that Chigur was so efficient at tracking L to that 2nd hotel so quickly but then maybe there was only one way he could've gone?
Also, when Chigur 1st opens the door to his hotel room # 130, he looks in then closes the door, only to open it again quickly. Any ideas why?

I was curious about the door opening and closing thing, too. Did you ever find out why he did that?

reply

Watch the scene again closely. Lleweleyn is in the cab and sees the curtains in 138 are seperated slightly. When he left earlier, he makes a point of closing them completely, so he knows someone is in there.
Chigur opens room 130 quickly to see how lonv it would take to get the drop on whoever is in the room.

Oh just saw your response now, Harold- thanks very much. I could not figure out how to edit my post so thanks for letting me know :)

Chigur rents room 130 because it has the same layout as 138. He opens and reopens the door as a recon of sorts
so he knows what he will see when he opens 138. Notice he checks the wall, whether it's solid and can shoot through it.

Everything in a Coen Bros. movie is important, they give you all the visual cues one would need to put the story together.
Which is so many people don't understand this movie...they're not being spoon fed every piece of information until they reach a happy ever after good guy always wins ending.

I've watched this movie about 6 times and I find something new every viewing. Subtle things, like when Llewelyn says he only wears white socks. Then later we see Chigur take off his boots and white socks. There's no higher meaning, just quirky things they throw in. The Coen's do a lot with dialogue also, you'll hear a phrase then it will pop-up later in the movie from a different character.
They do that a lot in The Big Lebowski.

When Chigurh bursts into the dark room, what are the two guys doing in the bathroom to begin with?

reply

Wasn't one guy sitting on the crapper?

reply

One guy was flossing and the other guy was standing in the shower fully clothed.
