Maybe this was asked, but on Larry's first night on the job, "Rexy" disappears, and Larry says something like "Is this some kind of David Copperfield thing?"
What does he mean?

He means David Copperfield (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Copperfield_(illusionist)), the illusionist, who is known for making famous landmarks disappear.

Could have. Myself, I'd heard of the magician before the book, making me later wonder if the magician took his stage name from the book.
