DE TRAIN! DE TRAIN!
There have been a rare few times when I've missed watching "UNSTOPPABLE", and it's kinda piqued my curiosity about trains, since I walked 3 miles to the Central Islip L.I.R.R. Station when I was 6 (The Ronkonkoma station was MUCH CLOSER, and since, the LIRR has switched over to mostly third-rail powered electric trains).
I now live in Panama City, where trains run paralel to the roads (sometimes in Very close proximity), and I wonder: If we had a southbound (inbound)runaway train like Triple-7, what would happen? My first guess us, if they couldn't stop or derail it, it would go through the Port here, and probably end up in St. Andrews Bay; the Local College would have to be evacuated (safest place:Hathaway Bridge (U.S. HWY. 98), on the P.C. Beach side.
Traffic would be tied up for hours, as most north/south main roads cross the tracks at some point. The Mall, which sits several yards from the tracks at a major intersection, would also have to be evacuated.
There are a few sidings, but only one I know of that's active;that would lead the train through an industrial area, then winds through a residential neighborhood, and eventually into another industrial area in Millville. The other two are abandoned, one goes towards downtown, the other towards the suburb of Lynn Haven.
If they have to evacuate or shut down traffic, several roads (major routes, side streets, etc.) would have to be shut down, causing a snarl of traffic all over town.
If it was going North (Outbound), There would be about a 90-minute window to stop it (at 70 miles an hour) Before it reaches Dothan Alabama. And it runs through heavily wooded hilly terrain, which makes that window smaller... Jawamax 8<{D}
