One unique-ish thing this movie does....

...that speaks to how well made it is,
is how long it really takes the action to get into the hands of the "main characters."

Denzel and Chris are introduced, but are pretty much kept on the periphery for the first 30 minutes or longer.

Interesting to see a movie, especially an action-y one, that doesn't bring the heroes into the fold for a third of the movie.

yeah, it struck me too as being different from your typical 'Die Hard' kind of movies

It's actually just over half the film before the main characters even cross paths with the train.

Yes...worked beautifully...more like a "Ok you guys tried it yalls way, and it didnt work...now let us handle this."

I genuinely think it's a great film.

obviously it's a bit stupid & cliché in parts, but by and large it moves to its own beat with a unique look, feel and structure to it. how many other films have a co-lead who is 100% responsible for his realistic personal problems? how often do you see that? and like the OP says how often are action heroes kept on the periphery of the plot for 30-odd minutes?

together the ants can crush the elephant.

I am glad that someone is liberal enough to enjoy the movie for what it is. Entertainment!

Agree with your points peapod;

also I just wondered : Denzel and Chris displayed great chemistry, I wonder if they got on well during the making of the movie.
