Hey! I love the movie (can't wait to see it) and I ABSOLUTELY love the dog. Does anyone know what breed he is? I'm guessing it he is a Airedale Terrier. Anyone one else agree? Even better do you know the actual breed?
It is an Irish Terrier, smaller and far superior to Airedales. They are fairly rare but are very smart and brave... Their nickname is "daredevil" and Bill Cosby and Joanne Woodward are among the "famous" that own them. I've had the privilege of owning two, both amazing and great.

Very well said enew!
To be perfectly honest though, I hope this movie flops. I don't want to think about what may happen if this movie is actually a huge success and everyone rushes out to buy an IT...

Sounds like SOMEONE is looking to overcompensate, huh? Are you kidding me? Rarity does not equate to superior. I raise Airedales and I BEG to differ with you. There's a reason why they are known as the KING of the terriers and it is not merely because they are so much larger.

Well I raise Irish terriers and I beg to differ with YOU..and FYI, they are called the 'king of terriers' due to their size, no other reason.

Yup, an Irish Terrier. I am the proud owner of Frodo Baggins the Irish Terrier. I didn't think anyone really knew about these dogs! There are less than 400 registered a year here in the US (per AKC stats). This makes them a very rare breed...
hehehe Frodo Baggins? That's a cute name! I own a 11 month old Irish Terrier, his name is Bailey. Yeah it is a rare breed, but I bet after this movie, people will go crazy trying to find one.
GO IRISH!! I HAVE A ONE YEAR OLD IRISH, MY THIRD ONE AND I WOULDN'T OWN ANYTHING BUT AN IRISH. THEY'RE EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT AND GREAT AT PROBLEM SOLVING!!! MINE HAS FIGURED OUT HOW TO OPEN THE FOLDING DOORS ON MY LINEN CLOSET. THEY'RE A GREAT SIZE, NOT TOO BIG LIKE THE AIREDALE. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE TO COME OUT. GOT GET IT!!!!
How much smaller is the Irish Terrier than the Airedale (ours died a few years ago at the age of 13)? I love the Irish terrier but I doubt if there is any terrier superior to an airedale. We also had a wire haired fox terrier quite a while ago. This group of dogs is my choice and we are considering getting another terrier - though we love large dogs we'd like to get one a little smaller than the airedale but not too small.
yes!! i have an irish terrier who will be turning 5 next week! her name is julie! like patricklusk said it is a very rare breed. i am in canada, and here there are only 2 different breeders so they are very very rare. irish terriers rule!
the dog used in the movie is an Irish Terrier, however the puppies used in the movie are soft coated wheaten terriers, it was our litter they used in the film, so we are quite excited to see it out. Kristen Williams www.wheatenterrierbreeder.com
"Her" name is Arwen-she also had 3 other "brothers" -yet she is the star-it is supposed to open Firehouse Dog-starring Arwen-we shall see-we are very excited that our girl made the big screen. Hopefully she will be a star on 4/4.
Wow. Looks like a Welsh Terrier to me, the breed from which the Airedale was bred (with an Otterhound, if I am not mistaken). Irish, huh? Interesting. Either way, a real cute dog.
Were the other dogs from the same litter or the same breeder? How many are males and how many are females? In the trailer I can tell the difference in sex. Easy to see with this breed, but not so easy in others like Collies. Thanx.
This is not correct the Redheads where obtained from Corey Riveria of the Trackways Kennels. I have have been owned by Irish Terriers (know as the Chew Crew) for over 30 years and have been a member of the Irish. Terrier Club of American for all of this time It took David Allsberry The principal animal trainer almost 3 years to get the IT's because no one would sell him one. they went as far as friends of mine in Finland. Not that there is any thing wrong with David and "Hollywood Animals" this outfit has a wonderful reputation.
Word on the IT show circuit is that one IT's was from rescue and two from pet shops. I also heard that two of the three were put down because they were meaner than junkyard dogs, and then the other one is like the trainer's 'pet' and goes around with him to promote the movie"
I really hope this isn't true, and as I've said before, I hope this movie flops.
"Oh yeah? Well life's a bitch, so I became one, honey!"
"But Firehouse director Todd Holland says that he took pains to convince a Los Angeles terrier rescue group, from which he adopted two of the four dogs for the film, that the movie's message would be supportive to its cause." http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/2007-03-28-dog-movies_N.htm
So two came from "a Los Angeles terrier rescue group" (I would assume not Irish Terrier Rescue, a service of the Irish Terrier Club of America) and two came from a breeder. An earlier post here said that one ended up in rescue after filming when an adopter gave him up.
I doubt you can find any ITs in pet shops. But after this movie you may.
Finding an IT in a pet shop is, while very rare, not unheard of. (infact, a friend of mine 'rescued' one from a pet shop a couple years ago.) As for where the dogs used in this movie came from, I have an extremely, extremely hard time believing that they came from a breeder.
"Oh yeah? Well life's a bitch, so I became one, honey!"
Yep, I'd have a hard time believing it, too, unless the breeder was a backyard breeder. I mean, anyone in the US can call themselves a "breeder." And the AKC isn't really particular about the scrupulousness of those who become members, either. A lot of people are under the mistaken impression that "AKC Registered" means "monitored and cared for."
I just find it hard to believe because I know first hand how careful <most> IT breeders are while screening potential buyers.
The breeders have worked so long and hard to keep their breed healthy, and out of hands of puppy mills...and I really don't think that this movie is going to help the cause.
"Oh yeah? Well life's a bitch, so I became one, honey!"
You know, I have to laugh. I saw the ad for this movie tonight and my immediate response was "Oh, NO! Now there will be puppy mills full of Irish Terriers!" It's funny to see all these other comments along the same lines. I have had three...currently I have Kate (whose real name is Gloccomara Bad Magic Baby), who is 10, and Conan (whose real name is Ballyouskill Jay of Thomeilis), who is 18 months. We're thinking about getting a third, actually, from the same woman in Dublin where we got Conan.
very cute pictures. we have an Irish terrier we got as a rescue from the shelter 3 years ago. his name is Stitch and he is so cute and fun. We fell in love with him at first site.
Thanks for posting all the great Irish Terrier pictures. My wife and I love our 10-year old neutered male Irish Terrier. He is named Argos after Ulysses' dog in the Odyssey.
Don't have an Irish Terrier myself but did some reading on them after seeing the movie and they sound like a really great breed, and their personality seems a lot like the younger of our two dogs. Our dogs have always been shelter dogs, and generally terrier mixes. Even though I loved the movie I would hate to see the breed sold in puppy mills. I'll admit it is easy to fall in love with a breed that is portrayed in film, but people really should do their homework and research a breed to see if it is the right one for them. Or, better yet go to a shelter as their are many good dogs there needing a good home.
