Who is the worse parent? At first glance, most would probably say Clay. He's cold, selfish, and he shot Orel in the leg. But, Bloberta is a major witch in season 1, and she started Clays drinking. Im curious to hear what others think.

Fakes her way through the day, but she does care about her kids. Though her parental skills are not exactly A+
Both of them are equally awful parents.
I can write a damn essay about this and their marriage but you can't really say that one parent was the worse because it is a cycle of pain for both of them. Clay is an abusive man who in a sense is evil but then again, he does take some interest (albeit negative) to Orel. There are times where he had shown some common sense until the third season and yet you can trace his negative emotions to his childhood and how it affected him. Yet, Bloberta although is not negative nor physically abusive (she didn't shoot her son) does show some mental and emotional problems that have impaired her parenting skills. I think that she does love Shapey a little bit more then Orel but then again, there was a moment in an episode where she shows compassion towards Orel after he was shot. She could have stopped Clay but didn't. She checked out long ago. My point is for every flaw you show in one of these characters there is a glaring one in the other. In the end, it is a miracle that Orel became a good person. Clay was a drunk who has mommy issues but then again, he would have been happier if he had never drank or married Bloberta. She is the one who introduced him to the booze and practically forced him into marriage. Yet, Clay during his marriage to her yet ....and so on. Their marriage is built not of love but blaming one another and unfortunately this showed a lot in their parenting skills.
Actually, Bloberta is such a witch and so self involved its a wonder the kids did not end up dead (shapey playing with all those dangerous items). At least Clay attempted, in his limited and lame way to guide oral...

Bloberta is a cold b/tch who clearly doesn't care that much about her kids. She seems to like Shapey more than Orel but as time goes on she cares less about him (though she does at least bother to correct the mistake that the Posubales have her kid). She might not be abusive physically, but her complete absence of warmth behind the automated basic parenting is not much better. In fact Clay's terrible influence on Orel would be a lot less if Bloberta actually cared as opposed to just getting Clay to deal with it.
That said Clay has to be worse. He's physically abusive, manipulative, cold and petty. The entire belt beating thing is depicted as a joke in the show up until season 3 when you realise it has accumulated into a trauma for Orel (and in that episode about Orel being a church you realise it was never funny- good ol' show). In fact, season 3's main storyline is about Orel realising just how awful a man Clay actually is.
Equally, Bloberta got Clay drinking and coerced him into a marriage he never wanted (how sad it is to see Clay be such a mild mannered guy, clearly got skeletons in the closet, but essentially a decent man who just wanted to be left alone). That said it hardly excuses Clay's behaviour and treatment of Orel.
