I Can’t Believe That Black William Did That. SPOILER

He murdered his own daughter, Emily, with a machine gun! This is true horror on a nearly-unimaginable scale! Emily was by far my favorite character. She had him by the proverbial balls. She had a well thought-through plan to destroy him as revenge for driving her mother (played by Sela Ward, who looks AMAZING at 62 years of age) to suicide. He told his wife that she was the only one who could see what he really is, but he was wrong. She passed that understanding on to
Emily, housed in the birthday gift that Emily rejected because she thought that her mother did not understand her, ironically. Emily is her father’s daughter AND her mother’s daughter, and stood right up to him every step of the way. Terrific acting from her, completely holding her own with Ed Harris, and terrific writing from the script. She says that he is having a psychotic break. He decides that Emily is a host, to protect his fractured psyche, and kills her with no hesitation. Stained and damaged as he is, suicidal as he is, William must nonetheless now know that the parks are not really places where you can sin and no one will know. YOU will know! William, who has murdered his wife and child, now has to be in his own private Hell. To what acts will his torment lead him now? There are no restraints on him any more, not that there were many before he murdered Emily. He literally has nothing left to lose. William, who pulled himself up by his bootstraps and achieved so much, is Damned.

So now we have Damned Black William, who wants to destroy the whole theme park complex, the Delos folks, who would rather destroy all the hosts than let even some of them get into the world outside, versus Ford, who wants to see the birth of a new species, and Delores, who is determined to escape to the world outside. Then there are the two wild cards: Maeve, of whom Ford thinks as a daughter, and Bernard, who Ford tells that he, Bernard, is the only one who can stop “it.” A 91-minute season finale awaits. I think this episode is even better that episode 2.8, and that is very hard to do.

reply

Two great episodes back to back. The finale has a tall order to fill. I did think William was going to shoot himself at the end but I’m glad he didn’t even though it’s tough to root for William now after what he did.

One thing I don’t get (there are many) is how is William still alive? He was shot in the chest. Are the bullets less lethal towards Humans?

reply

Bullets fired on William exit through plotholes.

reply

You mean plot holes?

He's being a troll filmtenk. No need to ask him to clarify.

reply

Hello Jeepster. No I'm not being a troll. I'm making an old joke about an inconsistency.

This is the future, and they have better medical care. In Season one Ford even says something about how the medical inventions are so great that they are able to conquer death.

The med kit that Emily used probably had some fancy medical gadgets, same as the one that William used in an earlier episode at a bar to fix a wound.

reply

That's outright murder & that truly pushes him over the edge. William stands to lose everything now that he went there. His company, his liberty & maybe even his life. He may as well shoot himself. Like Grace said "You keep pretending to someone else, you're not going to remember who you are" or something like that.

If anyone else gets wind of what William has done, it's all over for him. The only thing I'm looking forward to next week is I think he meets Dolores again. Should be fun!

reply

The Man in Black killing his own daughter and Teddy Killing himself in the same episode!? Holy SHIT!

reply

Emily could be alive as long someone is able to help her in time.

reply

Is there a point though? She doesn't really bring anything to the show.

reply

well the same could be said for Elsie

reply

Grace is the only human who is able to go toe-to-toe with Damned Black William. She brings more than something. He was beyond astonished that she was able to find him. Paraphrase: “This place is huge. You could ride forever and still not find me.” Grace: “I looked EVERYWHERE.” Do you think that Damned Black William is the only member of his family with that superhuman, passionate drive? Grace LOVED her damaged mother. She HAS to know why she died, and what drove her to it. Actually, she already knows, intuitively, which is why she has already planned her father’s death sentence. She doesn’t bring anything? She is the most exemplary human in this show.
She is the last, best argument why our species should continue coeval with Ford’s creation. Speaking as someone who is convinced that AI is a far greater threat to Homo sapiens than nuclear weapons and the Eboli
virus combined, I think that anyone who makes a good case for humans staying alive adds more than something. She brings everything.

I hope that she lives.

Regarding Elsie, she is Bernard’s moral compass. He REFUSES to kill her, though she poses a potential threat to the rise of Ford’s new species, artificial consciousness. Elsie is a good, strong, very intelligent and, at the risk of redundancy, because curiosity is the most certain sign of intelligence, curious person. If Westworld were a rock band, Elsie is rhythm guitar to Bernard’s lead guitar. She helps him to have Free Will, in spite of Ford’s proddings.

And Ford knows it; and almost certainly enjoys it. It is, after all, his game.

For now.

With your love letter to both Grace & Kelsie aside, I respectfully disagree.

Grace is not better than ANYBODY. You said she was the most exemplary human in this show. If that's true then everyone else is in trouble. Mind you she wanted her mother put away also along with William & was in the process of taking the steps necessary to do it. I'm not sure what soured her on her father, I was interrupted in the middle of her finding out whatever it was, but I certainly don't think she's on some moral high ground like you do.

She's less than honorable feigning "concern" over William while having another agenda altogether that she kept secret. Makes her as much two faced as William is, if not worse. She tried to reassure him while meaning harm, GREAT harm which is the mark of a VERY bad person in my book, not an "exemplary" human.

Kelsie is getting on my damn nerves. She's just as smug & cocksure as Charlotte Hale is In the end she means to sell Bernard out, so despite their Kodak moments together, I don't think there's any love lost between the two. The reason Ford didn't have Bernard kill her, means he must have some sort of purpose for her to fill. So her being Bernard's "moral compass" is absurd, because he knows he's in for the scrap heap once both she & he reach Delos or run into any other humans. Hell that bald guy & even Hale herself treated Bernard as a thing of worth more than Kelsie would've once they had him. But these might be arguments for another time.

Where did I say that Grace is honorable, or nice, or good, or fair? Nowhere. The moral of the books, Great Expectations and Beyond Good And Evil, and of the Ymou-directed films Hero and The Curse of the Golden Flower, is that there are people who are Good and people who are Great (and other, more trivial, people) and they are never qualities found in the same person. Grace is Great and is the mirror image of Damned Black William. (That’s what “she is her father’s daughter” means.) Grace is the real antagonist whom William has wanted, not Wyatt. Grace is HUMAN, not a science project. Grace is a real, level threat to William. She gets things done, which being “nice” rarely accomplishes. She is the only human we’ve seen who can best William. She is the only living human who sees what he truly is, because he has beguiled everyone else. (That’s what “she is her mother’s daughter” means.) Her focus is on herself. She doesn’t care what others think. This makes her an effective human being, and a true asset to the species. I hold her in high esteem. I also like her, a lot. You don’t. I don’t care.

I will add that it is possible that Maeve may turn out to be both Good and Great, and what a turn that would be! Maeve may go beyond human limits. Delores/Wyatt is only Great.

Bernard knows what Elsie’s about. His focus is on himself. His ability to fight the temptation to save himself by killing her is what makes Elsie his moral compass. If his gun is pointing away from her, he can accept himself. If the gun is pointed at her, he cannot. He is Good, but not Great.

Both of these female characters contribute significantly to my enjoyment of Westworld. I don’t need anyone to agree with me. My focus is on myself.

Did he really cut into his arm at the end?
Does that mean he might already be a host?
WTF is going on people!?

reply

I think he think he is a host or is at least confused after killing his own daughter.

reply

He is not a host, they scanned him.

reply

yeah I know he was scanned but i think he is in shock so he doesn't really know what happening.

I don't know why you or anyone is surprised about William being the ASSHOLE Jerk that he is?, have you been watching the entire two seasons? Did you hear what his wife said in the last episode to him? This is a man he has manipulated every person from Logan to his sister, to the father to gain their trust and took everything he could from those people. He is a self-centered egotistical jerk whose life is become to live in the Westworld. The entire season one they kept telling him that the reaching the center of the Maze was not meant for him, but his Ego is so big and he is self-centered even when he is being told the truth he refuses to believe it, and this time it cost him his daughter's life and yet he is so detached that the game and beating Ford is still more important. William was a weak insecure man, who found himself winning in a fake world of Westworld, he called it shedding his real skin, which is a LIE to himself, the Westworld is where everyone wins, its a theme park to make all those fantasies come true and for ovet 30 years he took his identity from that world, that shows how sick this man is that he he lost touch with reality and I hope they host kill him once for all.
