I don't get this

During the scene that Chad, Zeke, and Jason are on the roof of the school with Troy, and after Chad says "even if you turn out to be the worst singer in the world", and then Jason, says that they don't know because they never heard him sing. I don't get this, earlier in the movie when they sing the song, Getcha your head in the game, Troy is singing the lead vocals of the song, and the rest of the team is singing background vocals on the song. But they are there, so wouldn't they be hearing him sing, or how would they know to sing those background vocals?

its because the movie is crap

I believe it is the "show within the show" concept being illustrated here.

The movie is a musical, which means that characters inexplicably burst into song and dance to illustrate thoughts, feelings, etc. The characters do not note that they are doing this.

Within that show is the show in which the characters are trying to win a basketball game, a part in the Twinkletown, etc. These characters have not heard Troy sing (apparently not even in the team shower...)
